Bloomington/Normal Sunrise Rotary Teacher of the Year

The Sunrise rotary Teacher of the Year was established in 1995 to recognize and acknowledge the innovative work and teacher commitment given to the students and the community by a local educator. This award is presented annually in the fall to a K-12 teacher who has gone above and beyond their duties to engage students, their classes, or school in activities that accept the Rotarian's "Ideal of Service" as a basis for their programs.

Eligibility: All teachers, elementary (K-6) or Secondary (7-12) in public, private, or parochial schools in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. The teacher must be teaching full time during the current year, and be personally responsible for the educational and service activities and programs in their school and community during the present or preceding school year.

Application or Nomination: Applications and nominations can be submitted by the teacher seeking this award, any Sunrise Rotarian, school staff, administrator, parents or anyone having knowledge of a teacher's service to students and the community. Nominations and applications require a completed application form, which can be obtained from a Sunrise Rotary officer or vocational committee member.

Content of Entry: The written narrative should include, but not necessarily be limited to:

  • A brief outline documenting your service and education programs involving students in the community.
  • List areas or types of service and to who/whom they benefit.
  • Explain ways the programs or activities are being extended to other students, grades, areas, (physical and academic) and to people in the community.
  • Explain how you could and would involve Sunrise Rotary in some of your service activities within your school and the community.
  • Submit two letters of recommendations (Examples: employer, staff, personal letter of support from parents or community recipients of your service.)

The narrative should support the following question: How has the teacher shown concern, scope, and originality in incorporating service into his/her curricula or club activities and programs that better their school and the community through service activities.

Entries must be received by the May 28, 2004. The selected teacher will be notified in June and recognized at the first Sunrise Rotary meeting in September.

Recognition & Notification: An award letter will be sent to you, your school and district administrator. The local papers will be sent a press release and brief write up about your award. The selected teacher will be recognized at the first Sunrise Rotary meeting in September. You are invited to bring a guest and your administrator with you to receive your award, plaque, and one years honorary membership into Bloomington/Normal Sunrise Rotary Club.
