2000 was an exciting year for the vocational committee! As a continuation of the previous year, we worked extensively with the Area Vocational Center and the warm, friendly group of teachers and coordinators. The year commenced with a visit to Sunrise Rotary by Dena Weth, Suzanne Moyer and a student who had benefitted from the support and programs of the AVC.
Our projects included:
- Mentor Program: Three members of our Rotary attended this very informative training meeting in which we discussed the benefits of student mentoring. A lack of student participation in this program did not allow our group to become actively involved. However, one member of the Sunrise Rotary recently became a student mentor and only time will determine the success of the project.
- Power Lunch: Sunrise Rotarians gathered with teachers and other members of the community to support an annual workshop. Our mission was to demonstrate the proper way to conduct oneself at a professional/business luncheon. The turnout was great and so was the lunch. If nothing else is retained, the sudents at a minimum know what fork to use.
- Career Panel: This was a huge success. The students truly enjoyed listening to and learning from the professionals. I was told that many students hear only the downside and don't know many people who enjoy their jobs. It was vey inspiring and motivating to learn tha there are individuals who really, really enjoy their professions.
- Scholarship: This years scholarship applicant base was extended to include the non-traditional student who was seeking an opportunity to increase their market ability in the job market by continuing their education. In total, there were seven applicants which made the selection process extremely difficulty. A tremendous amount of effort was placed to make sure that the committee selected the recipent. As our committee received each applicant, the numbers dwindled until one candidate remained. Blake Cottrell became the scholarship recipient.
- Teacher of the Year: No teacher was selected, however Suzanne Moyer of Bloomington High School was nominated.

Aaron Ellison grew up in Galesburg Illinois. He
graduated from SIUE in December of 1999. He taught in
Quincy for one year and then moved to
Bloomington/Normal to become the fifth grade teacher
of Eugene Field Elementary beginning the school year
of 2001-2002. Aaron has brought great energy,
enthusiasm, and creative hands-on learning to his
classroom. For example: Aaron had the children reenact
being pioneers moving out west, slaves and their
owners, dress up and tell the life story of deceased
heros etc.. They did a great deal of role play. All
of the children in his class did not want the school
year to end. It truly shows through his work that he
loves to educate children.
