International Service 1999-2000

A Year in Review

Our club, in a joint effort with the Normal Club, hosted the Japanese GSE team.  Assisting with the scheduling, coordinating and hosting of activities during their stay in Bloomington.  Member Jim Waldorf accompanied the GSE team on visits to local social and medical treatment centers.

Our club chose not to participate in the student exchange program for 1999-2000, and is evaluating participation in the 2000-2001 year.  The difficulty in obtaining host families has caused us to more closely examine our capability of hosting students in the future.
The Bloomington-Normal Sunrise Club continued our involvement in a local immunization effort, providing educational material through the McLean County Health Department.  Our goal remains to immunize a higher percentage of the children under two years of age in our community.
Club member Charmaine West participated in a fact finding trip to Belize, gathering information on medical and dental needs in the area as a possible destination for a future medical team visit.  Dental supplies, including toothbrushes and dental floss were donated by Kirk Noriain and several other local dental professionals.

An attempt to send our member Charmaine West to the Ivory Coast of Africa to participate in the Polio Plus program was cancelled by rotary International after travel advisories were issued bt the US State Department.

A Paul Harris Fellow award was presented to outgoing club president Rex Schaeffer.
